Behind His Smile

Publishing October 27, 2026 | Paperback | 22 pages

On the outside, Roman appears happy and full of life, just like the other kids at school. But on the inside, he feels all mixed up, with emotions he doesn’t understand swirling in his mind and body. He smiles at his teacher and plays with his friends, and no one is able to see the secret turmoil he carries.

Through poignant imagery and delicate language, Behind His Smile illustrates how children can mask inner struggles and offers guidance to readers so they can recognize these warning signs in themselves and others. This story balances heartbreak and hope to transform grief into a powerful message: Every child deserves to be seen, and by noticing the feelings of others, we can create a light in the darkness for the people we love.

About the Author

Beth Rabena has been a teacher for over two decades, spending most of her career teaching third grade. Born and raised in Reading, Pennsylvania, she enjoys the gym, the beach, and spending time with family and friends, especially her son, Dylan, and her dog, Chance. Beth was inspired to write Behind His Smile after one of her students took his own life. She hopes this book will encourage more conversation about children’s mental health, especially in schools.
